If you have dry eye, you know how frustrating it can be. The burning, the scratchy feeling, the blurry vision that comes and goes. You have probably tried artificial tears, warm compresses, and maybe even changed your environment.
But if those things are not enough, OptiLight may be the next step. Here is what to expect before, during, and after your treatment.
OptiLight is a non-invasive treatment that uses gentle light pulses to treat dry eye. It is the first and only FDA-approved intense pulsed light therapy for the management of dry eye. The light targets inflammation and helps unblock the tiny oil glands along your eyelids. When those glands are working well, your tears stay on your eye longer before evaporating.
You will need to schedule a consultation with your eye doctor. Before treatment, your eye doctor will do a full examination. They will ask about your symptoms, medical history, and what you have tried so far. This is to make sure OptiLight is the right option for you.
On the day of your treatment, come with clean eyes. No makeup, lotions, or creams around your eyes. If you wear contact lenses, take them out beforehand. Wear comfortable clothes since you will be sitting in a treatment chair.
You will need to sit comfortably for your eye doctor to place protective shields over your eyes. They will also apply a cool gel to the treatment area to keep your skin comfortable.
Your doctor will gently pulse light from a handheld device onto the skin below your eyes. Most people describe the sensation as a warm snap, like a rubber band gently tapping the skin. It is not painful, and each session takes about fifteen minutes.
The device is designed so your eyes stay open during treatment. You will blink naturally, which helps the process.
You can return to your normal activities right after treatment. Your eyes may feel slightly dry or sensitive for a few hours, but that usually passes quickly.
Your doctor may recommend using preservative-free artificial tears for a few days after treatment. This helps keep your eyes comfortable while the glands begin to work better.
You may notice some improvement after the first session, but the full benefits build over time. Most people need a series of treatments, usually three to four sessions. These will be spaced, probably a month apart.
After treatment, your skin may be more sun-sensitive for a few days. Use sunscreen and avoid direct sunlight during that time.
OptiLight is not for everyone. It works best for people with dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction, in which the oil glands along your eyelids become clogged. If your dry eye is caused by something else, your doctor may recommend a different treatment.
